Is anonymity really guaranteed?

Technically, yes — with one caveat you should know about.

When an employee sends a message, HushAsk immediately hashes their Slack user ID using SHA-256. The original ID is never written to disk. What gets stored is a one-way cryptographic string that cannot be reversed to identify anyone. HushAsk cannot tell you who sent a message.

The caveat: if your organization is on Slack's Enterprise Grid plan, Slack's own audit log records which users send DMs to any bot — including HushAsk. That log is a Slack platform behavior, not something HushAsk controls or can suppress. See our privacy page for the full detail.

Can admins find out who sent a message?

No. HushAsk stores message content and routing data — not sender identity. There is no setting, no override, and no request process that surfaces a sender's name or Slack ID. It's not a policy we enforce; it's a technical property of how the system works.

What happens if someone sends a threatening or harassing message?

HushAsk routes messages anonymously — that's its job. It cannot identify the sender after the fact.

If your organization receives a message that requires escalation, the appropriate path is your internal HR or legal process, and — if warranted — law enforcement contact with Slack directly.

We recommend setting clear expectations with your team about what HushAsk is for and what constitutes misuse. If you need guidance on workspace configuration to reduce abuse risk, contact [email protected].

How does the Notion sync work?

Once you've connected Notion in the HushAsk settings, a Sync to Notion button appears on each answered message thread. When an admin clicks it, the Q&A is saved to a database in your own Notion workspace. No sender identity is included in the record.

Syncing is manual and per-message — nothing is sent to Notion automatically. You stay in control of what gets archived.

If you revoke HushAsk's Notion access from your Notion settings, syncing stops immediately.

What's included in the free plan?

Everything. The free plan includes anonymous message routing, HR channel routing, and Notion sync — the full product, with no features gated behind a paywall.

The only limit is volume: 20 messages per month per workspace. No credit card required.

If your team needs more, Pro is $19 per month — flat rate, unlimited messages, same features. See pricing.

Can I use a custom channel instead of #hush-hr or #hush-public?

Yes. Channel configuration is managed entirely from the HushAsk App Home — select whichever channels you want for each track. No support required. There's also a Reset option in App Home if you need to clear your configuration and start fresh (your message history is preserved).

How do I install HushAsk?

Click Add to Slack and follow the authorization prompts. Installation takes about 60 seconds. You'll be asked to select your routing channels and optionally connect Notion.

If you run into any issues during setup, email [email protected].

Will anyone know it was me?

HushAsk is built so that no one — including the HR admin reading your message, and including us — can identify who sent it. Your Slack user ID is hashed the moment you send, and the original is immediately discarded. What gets stored cannot be reversed.

The one exception: if your company uses Slack's Enterprise Grid plan, Slack's own infrastructure records bot interactions. Your Slack admin may be able to see that you sent a DM to the HushAsk bot through Slack's audit logs — independently of anything HushAsk does. If this matters to you, check with your IT or Slack admin before using HushAsk.

If you're not sure whether your company is on Enterprise Grid, the simplest path is to ask your IT or Slack admin. There's no fully reliable self-serve check available to regular employees.

Can I take back a message after I've sent it?

Yes — but only before an admin replies. Until then, you can delete your original message in your private message with HushAsk and it will be retracted. Once an admin has responded, the message can no longer be retracted — they've already seen it.

What does the admin see?

Your message, the channel it was routed to, and the timestamp. That's it. They do not see your name, your Slack handle, or any identifier linking the message to you.

Is HushAsk a separate app, or does it work inside Slack?

It works inside Slack. You send messages by opening a direct message with the HushAsk bot in your existing workspace — no separate account, no new login, no additional app to install.
